Dr. Werner Nicolaas Nel
Dr. Werner Nicolaas Nel obtained his LLB degree in 2008 and his LLM degree (International law) in 2009 from the University of Johannesburg. He obtained his LLD degree in 2019 from the University of Pretoria under the supervision of Prof. Christo Botha and Prof. Dr. Christof Sauer with a thesis entitled “International criminal accountability for religious persecution in terms of the Rome Statute: A taxonomy of crimes against humanity of religious persecution”.
Dr. Nel has lectured part-time at the University of Johannesburg since 2009 and in addition joined the Department of Law, Tshwane University of Technology as a permanent law lecturer in 2012. His main research interest is public international law, focussing specifically on the use of international criminal law to counteract impunity for religious persecution and deprivations of religious freedom. He is an active researcher, with multiple presentations at international conferences and peer-reviewed international journal publications on the intersection between international law and religion.
